Montenegro Hiking Tours – Durmitor NP & Prutaš Peak Hike

Welcome To Our Montenegro Hiking Tour!

As one of the top choices when it comes to hiking tours in Montenegro, our Prutaš peak hiking tour is designed for backpackers and enthusiastic nature lovers passing through. An all-inclusive Montenegro hiking tour that will leave you amazed and speechless, wanting to return and see what else lies in this marvelous piece of planet Earth.

Expect anything but the ordinary! Starting from our beloved base in Boka Bay, departing from 360 Monte’s office, our goal for the day is Durmitor. Durmitor is a mountain range and a national park with over 40 peaks exceeding 2000 meters (6561 feet) above sea level. Our goal is to summit one of the most unique and beautiful peaks of Durmitor. Depending on the weather, group dynamics, and the guide’s decision, we will choose Prutaš Peak or Crvena Greda Peak.

Prutaš Peak, known as the king of south Durmitor, stands at 2393 meters (7851 feet) and offers breathtaking views and a rewarding hike. Alternatively, Crvena Greda Peak, at 2175 meters (7136 feet), provides an equally stunning experience, with the added attraction of the serene Jablan Lake nearby.

Both hikes are moderately challenging, featuring some technical sections, but accessible to any determined hiker. While there, we won’t miss out on visiting a local household to sample this region’s best gastronomic specialties.

We designed this Montenegro hiking tour to be ALL-INCLUSIVE, so there isn’t much for you to worry about, and the only thing we expect during the day is good spirits and strong-willed Smurfs!

Montenegro Hiking Tours: Prutas Peak Hike Overview

Our Montenegro hiking tours to Prutaš Peak or Crvena Greda is a journey that will leave you speechless, craving more of this stunning landscape. This all-inclusive adventure is designed for backpackers and nature enthusiasts. It takes you deep into Durmitor National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its dramatic peaks, glacial lakes, and pristine wilderness. With over 40 peaks exceeding 2,000 meters (6562 feet), Durmitor is the heart of Montenegro’s mountain culture and a paradise for hikers looking to immerse themselves in raw, untouched nature.

Our adventure begins early, departing from 360 Monte’s office in Kotor at 7:00 AM. As we drive along the scenic coastal roads, we make our first stop in Perast at 7:20 AM, a charming baroque town that perfectly captures the beauty of the Bay of Kotor. Here, you’ll have the chance to snap some breathtaking photos of the old stone palaces, the iconic islands, and the shimmering waters of the Adriatic before we continue towards the north.

At 8:50 AM, we take a short break at Floyd Food Factory, a great spot to grab a coffee and wake up fully for the day’s adventure. Shortly after, at 10:00 AM, we arrive in Pošćenje, a picturesque village known for its traditional Montenegrin hospitality and locally sourced food. Here, we enjoy a homemade breakfast, featuring farm-fresh ingredients and flavors unique to this region. This meal is not just fuel for the hike ahead—it’s a chance to connect with local culture and experience the warmth of Montenegrin hospitality.

After breakfast, we drive deeper into Durmitor, reaching either Dobri Do or Bosača by 10:40 AM. These high-altitude starting points serve as the gateway to our hike, where the towering peaks of Durmitor loom in the distance, waiting to be explored. At 11:00 AM, we lace up our hiking boots, adjust our backpacks, and begin our ascent. Depending on the weather conditions and the group’s preferences, our guide will lead us to Prutaš or Crvena Greda, two of the most visually striking peaks in the national park.

Prutaš, the “King of South Durmitor,” stands at an impressive 2,393 meters (7,851 feet). It is famous for its layered rock formations, resembling a stack of vertical stone plates, giving it a truly unique appearance. The climb to the top is an unforgettable experience, with panoramic views stretching across the Durmitor massif, including the legendary Bobotov Kuk, the second highest peak in Montenegro. Along the way, we pass by Škrčki Pogled viewpoint, where you can marvel at the colorful rock layers of Šareni Pasovi, a geological wonder that adds even more beauty to the landscape.

Alternatively, we may hike to Crvena Greda, a peak reaching 2,175 meters (7,136 feet). While slightly lower in elevation, it offers an equally breathtaking experience, especially with the added attraction of the serene Jablan Lake nestled below. The reflections of the mountains in the lake’s glassy waters create a mesmerizing scene, making this one of the most photogenic spots in Durmitor. This route is less technical than Prutaš but still presents a rewarding challenge for those eager to experience Montenegro’s rugged terrain.

Regardless of which peak we summit, reaching the top at 1:00 PM is a moment of triumph. The views are beyond words—miles of unspoiled wilderness, jagged ridges, and deep valleys stretching as far as the eye can see. Here, we take a well-deserved break, soaking in the scenery, capturing photos, and feeling the true essence of Montenegro’s wild beauty.

After spending around 20 minutes at the summit, we begin our descent, making our way back down through alpine meadows and rocky paths. By 3:30 PM, we arrive at a local household, where a delicious homemade lunch awaits us. This is a chance to savor the flavors of northern Montenegro, with traditional specialties that reflect the region’s culinary heritage. The warm, hearty meal is the perfect way to celebrate our accomplishment and recharge before the journey back.

At 4:30 PM, we board our vehicle and start the drive back to Kotor. As we descend from the mountains, we pass through Montenegro’s diverse landscapes, from rolling hills and deep canyons to vast plateaus and emerald-green forests. The journey offers a moment of reflection, allowing you to take in everything you’ve experienced throughout the day.

By 8:00 PM, we arrive back in Kotor, tired but fulfilled, carrying unforgettable memories of one of Montenegro’s most incredible hikes. This tour is designed for those who crave adventure, stunning landscapes, and a taste of local culture. With a moderate to high difficulty level, it is accessible to hikers with reasonable fitness levels who are eager to challenge themselves and embrace the wild side of Montenegro.

Throughout the day, our experienced English-speaking guide ensures that you have a safe, enjoyable, and enriching experience. From navigating the trails to sharing fascinating insights about Durmitor’s geology, history, and wildlife, our guide is there to make this adventure truly unforgettable.
