Risan is the oldest city in the Bay of Kotor, Montenegro. It was founded by the Illyrian tribe Risoniti in the mid-3rd century BC. Tucked up on a tiny stretch of coastline with mountains encircling it, Risan is located 17 km (10.5 mi) from Kotor.

The town has a rich history with tales of the Illyrian queen Teuta, Roman domination, and medieval conquests.

The Roman mosaics in Risan are intriguing relics from a once-grand villa belonging to a Roman aristocrat from the second or third century BC. Visitors to the “Urbana” house are enthralled by these mosaics even after time, conflict, and natural disasters have damaged them.

 

The most well-known of these mosaics features the Greek god of sleep, Hypnos, in a rare portrayal in Roman art. It is painstakingly created from vibrant red, green, yellow, and blue stone squares. In addition, visitors can see several different mosaics in various styles, including sunbursts, floral themes, knight crosses, and checkerboard patterns.

 

These mosaics, located on the villa’s side and in the central chambers, highlight the creative brilliance of Roman culture and the villa’s important role in the home lives of Roman nobles.
