Early Morning: Hiking in Kotor – ‘Conquering’ Kotor Fortress

Start your day by hiking in Kotor. Welcome to San Giovanni Fortress! The ascent is steepest in the early morning when the air is cooler, and the light across the Bay of Kotor is breathtaking. The ascent is well worth it when you reach the top, which offers unmatched panoramic views of the mountains and azure Adriatic Sea.

Mid to Late Morning: Explore Kotor Old Town

After leaving the fortress, discover Kotor Old Town’s rich history. Explore its winding cobblestone alleys, visit historic churches, and unwind in quaint squares. You can also immerse yourself in the area’s historical and cultural legacy by visiting the Maritime Museum and the Cathedral of Saint Tryphon. If you don’t feel like exploring alone, hiring a tour guide and joining the walking tour of Kotor can be helpful.

Lunch in Kotor

Take a break and enjoy lunch in one of Kotor’s many restaurants. Savor local dishes like Njeguški prosciutto and Montenegrin cheese, perhaps paired with a glass of Vranac, the local red wine. For those who do not eat meat, we suggest visiting Resto Bar Taraca – one of the best restaurants in Montenegro for vegan and vegetarian dishes. Oh, and a good rest after a great meal is advisable. 😃

Afternoon: Visit Perast and Our Lady of the Rocks

In the afternoon, drive, cycle, or take a bus to the nearby town of Perast. This peaceful, picturesque town offers stunning views and a slower pace. From here, embark on a boat trip to the islet of Our Lady of the Rocks, a must-see destination known for its beautiful church and fascinating legends. Whether you choose a guided shore excursion or a leisurely boat tour from Kotor, this visit will provide a serene counterpoint to the day’s earlier activities.

If you plan on extending your seafaring experience, check out the boat trips to the Blue Cave. This natural cave is a true gem of the Montenegrin coast and one of the best places to visit in Montenegro.

Evening: Dinner in Kotor

Return to Kotor for a relaxed evening. Enjoy dinner at one of Kotor’s many restaurants, soaking in the vibrant yet laid-back atmosphere as you reflect on the day’s adventures. This is the perfect way to wind down your first full day in Montenegro. Remember that if you visit some hotspots for food, such as Taraca, you’ll probably need to book in advance.

Early Morning: Serpentine Ride From Kotor to Lovćen

Start your day with an exhilarating drive up the famous Serpentine Road, a series of 25 sharp switchbacks that wind up the mountainside from Kotor. As you ascend, you’ll be treated to increasingly spectacular views of the Bay of Kotor, a sight that becomes even more breathtaking with each turn.

Your destination is Njeguši Village, a quaint settlement known for its rich culinary heritage. Enjoy a traditional Montenegrin breakfast featuring the village’s famous smoked prosciutto and Njeguški sir (cheese) before visiting the house where the great Montenegrin ruler and poet, Petar Petrović Njegoš, was born.

Alternatively, you can take a cable car from Kotor to Lovcen and have a different experience.

Late Morning: Lovćen National Park and Mausoleum

From Njeguši, continue your journey to Lovćen National Park, home to the Petar Petrović Njegoš Mausoleum. Perched atop Mount Lovćen, this mausoleum is not just a resting place for Montenegro’s most revered historical figure but also a symbol of the country’s cultural identity. The ascent to the mausoleum involves climbing 461 steps, but the effort is rewarded with stunning views that stretch to Italy on a clear day. The mausoleum is a masterpiece, combining elements of Montenegrin history and folklore with breathtaking artistry.

Early Afternoon: Old Royal Capital, Cetinje

Next, visit Cetinje, the historic capital of Montenegro and the nation’s cultural heart. This town is a must-see for history buffs, offering a deep dive into Montenegro’s past. Wander through streets that echo with stories of kings and bishops, explore the grand old palaces, and immerse yourself in the rich heritage of this small but mighty nation. Cetinje is where Montenegro’s soul beats strongest, where every corner tells a tale of bravery, tradition, and the unyielding spirit of its people. If you have time to spare, definitely visit museums and Cetinje Monastery.

Late Afternoon: Budva Riviera and Sveti Stefan

In the afternoon, head to the Budva Riviera, famous for its stunning beaches and vibrant atmosphere. On your way, stop by Sveti Stefan, one of Montenegro’s most iconic landmarks, for postcard-perfect photos. This former fishing village turned luxury resort is perched on a picturesque islet, connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway.

Early Evening: Budva Old Town and Dinner

Arrive in Budva, where you can explore the charming Old Town in the late afternoon. Wander through its narrow streets, lined with ancient stone buildings, and soak in the history of the 5th century. As evening falls, enjoy dinner at one of Budva’s many seaside restaurants, savoring fresh seafood and local specialties as you watch the sunset over the Adriatic. Late Afternoon: Tara River Bridge

Conclude your day with a visit to the Tara Bridge, an architectural marvel that spans the Tara River Canyon, the deepest canyon in Europe. The bridge offers spectacular views of the canyon below, and for the more adventurous, there’s the option of zip-lining across the canyon for a thrilling experience. Nestled between Bosnia and Montenegro, the Tara River is the ultimate thrill. Its crystal clear waters and impressive rapids make it heaven for anyone who loves white water rafting.

Hiking in Durmitor National Park

On a side note, Durmitor cannot be visited in a day. It would take at least a weekend to explore the charms of this National Park. While there, explore its nature and take one of the best hikes in Durmitor: Prutas Peak hike – the King of South Durmitor.

Visit the Devil’s Lake at Durmitor National Park

Devil’s Lake (Vražje Jezero) in Durmitor National Park is a hidden gem surrounded by incredible landscapes. Just climb the hill next to the lake and enjoy the serenity. This small, glacial lake is known for its deep blue waters and the legends surrounding it, adding an air of mystery to its beauty. Nestled in a tranquil, high-altitude valley, it’s a perfect spot for those looking to experience the serene and untouched nature of Durmitor. The lake is part of the Durmitor UNESCO World Heritage Site, making it a must-visit for nature enthusiasts.

Practical Tips While Exploring Montenegro

Transportation

Renting a car is highly recommended for this itinerary, as it offers the flexibility to explore at your own pace. Public transport is available but limited, particularly to more remote areas like Lovćen National Park and Njeguši Village.

Wear comfortable shoes suitable for hiking, as some parts will require some exercise to get to.

Getting to most of these places might be tricky with a bus, so renting a car or booking some of the Montenegro Tours and Excursions that go that way is best. Having a tour guide is always appreciated.

Accommodation in Kotor

We always recommend staying and making Kotor your base of exploration. There are various hotels and Airbnbs in the area. We suggest staying at the best hostel in Kotor – Old Town Hostel for those on a budget and who want to experience a social atmosphere.

Where to Eat in Kotor

It depends on your preferences, and the food is excellent throughout. Our recommendation and our favorite restaurant is Taraca.

Best Time to Visit Kotor

Spring and early autumn are the best times to visit Montenegro, offering pleasant weather and fewer tourists than the peak summer months. Of course, nothing beats the summer and all the fun! If you plan on visiting Montenegro in September or during the off-season, expect fewer crowds (though still busy) and less heat.
